Season 1 | Episode 1

The Tribe

Drama/Family, New Zealand/United Kingdom 1999

Before “The Hunger Games”: New Zealand’s dystopian cult series about love, dictatorship and solidarity at the end of the world

A mysterious virus has wiped out all the adults. In the crumbling cities, youth gangs with war paint and punk outfits fight for power and survival. The pandemic seems to be returning the Earth to its original, human-less state... Unless the young survivors, who have banded together into warring tribes, can overcome their rivalries and defy all the lurking dangers to build a new, better world together from the ashes of the old one. But time is running out for them... Raymond Thompson’s series had no big budget at its disposal, yet it went on to become an international cult hit. One reason for this lies in the themes it explores for young people without trivialising them. It deals with democracy and dictatorship, ideology, love and responsibility. In doing so, the popular series anticipated the wave of dystopian youth stories such as “The Hunger Games” by a decade. FLIMMO, the parenting guide, recommends the series for teens ages 12 and up. The world began without the human race. Now it seems it will end exactly the same way. Unless the young survivors of a mysterious pandemic can come together against all odds and build a new world from the ashes of the old one.
