Vampirfilme

The undead bite back: from cult classics to coming-of-age – cinema, too, makes vampires immortal

For more than a hundred years, cinema has kept breathing new life into its vampires. There is hardly another genre that transforms itself with such relish, and that keeps rising again every time it is declared dead. Our selection covers the full spectrum: from the horror classic “Horror Express”, in which Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing come face to face with terror aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway, to the Australian “Thirst” and the ’80s cult favourite “Vamp”, all the way to the melancholy city vampire of “The Wisdom of Crocodiles”. “Let the Right One In” turns the myth into a tender coming-of-age story, while Park Chan-wook’s “Thirst” transforms a priest into a bloodsucker with a guilty conscience. Recent films such as “My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To”, “Perpetrator” and “Bitten” prove that the thirst for fresh ideas is far from quenched. So: garlic at the ready, and out into the night! This collection was created in cooperation with the podcast “Cliffhanger – Ein Podcast über Filme und Fortsetzungen” (a podcast about films and sequels). In the episode “Warum lieben wir Vampirfilme?” (“Why Do We Love Vampire Films?”), the hosts follow the vampire through film history, from ancient vampire folklore to modern vampire cinema. How has our image of the bloodsucker changed, and why are they still so hard to kill? Along the way, they also discuss the films “Let the Right One In”, “The Wisdom of Crocodiles”, “My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To” and “Thirst”. So: just tune in! The podcast is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, but only in German.
